The science behind bipolar ionization

The quality of air inside a building is a major determining factor impacting on the health and wellbeing of its occupants. Indeed, indoor air quality (IAQ) is important for two principal reasons. First, people typically spend around 90% of their time indoors. Secondly, indoor air pollution is between 25 and 100 times worse than outdoor pollution.

 

Poor ventilation increases Covid risk

Poor ventilation in confined indoor spaces is associated with the increased transmission of respiratory infections in general and COVID-19 in particular, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

It warned recently:

“In a restaurant outbreak of 10 cases in three families in Guangzhou, China, transmission was attributed to the spread of respiratory droplets carrying SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) by the airflow generated by the air conditioning.

“Similarly, two other outbreaks from China in January 2020 attribute air conditioning systems using a re-circulating mode as a likely aid to transmission. Well-maintained, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems may have a complementary role in decreasing transmission in indoor spaces by increasing the rate of air change, decreasing recirculation of air and increasing the use of outdoor air.”

The best way to ensure good IAQ and thus protect people’s health is through properly specified ventilation systems and treatment of the air the indoor space.

This, however, begs a fundamental question – which is the most effective means of ventilation/air treatment?

The answer is bipolar ionization.

 

How does bipolar ionization work?

Much like sunlight does in the atmosphere, bipolar ionization produces a natural bio-climate, rich in positive and negative oxygen ions.

The negative ions contain an extra electron while the positive ions are missing an electron, resulting in an unstable condition. In an effort to restabilize, these bipolar ions seek out atoms and molecules in the air to trade electrons with, effectively neutralizing bacteria and viruses, as well as other ‘particulates’ such as gases and aerosols, and volatile organic compounds.

In practice, airborne particles – including viruses such as COVID-19 – are charged by the ions, causing them to cluster and be caught in filters. As they divide to reproduce, bacteria and virus cells bond with oxygen ions and are destroyed.

Tests conducted by the Spanish government show a reduction in a coronavirus surrogate by 99% airborne and 80% on surfaces in 10 minutes by using plasma air ionizers.

 

Superior and safe air purification

Bipolar air ionizers are superior to reactive air purification methods such as ‘end-of-pipe’ solutions that use a ‘pass-through’ or ‘filtered’ approach because they proactively treat the air in the occupied space at the source of contamination rather than attempting to remove it later.

On top of this, bipolar ionization destroys microbes without damaging DNA, so it is perfectly safe. Unlike ultraviolet light, radioactivity and some caustic chemicals, for example, it does not cause cancer.
